VIC03 - What’s that sound?

Develop an AI/ML system to classify/identify the species of marine mammal that produced a vocalization. Starting with an extensive existing annotated dataset of hydrophone recordings, your team will develop a training and prediction model framework. Your classifier, if operationalized, could help reduce vessel strikes and would be highly valuable for research into marine mammals and ecosystem change.

A classifier that can identify the species that produced a particular vocalization (based on either the spectrogram, audio, or both), or produce a list of potential species sorted by likelihood, and report the lowest level clade that the sound can be classified as. Additionally, an initial analysis or characterization of marine mammal occurrences by season, time of day or other relevant factors.
