Ocean Hackathon®: an ocean of data!

Research organizations and administrations gather extensive datasets to enhance understanding and support public policy. Ocean Hackathon® provides a platform to harness the vast potential of these datasets in addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges. Participants worldwide gain access to a diverse array of datasets essential for tackling these challenges and enriching their prototypes.

Event organizers, international data providers, and local contributors collect data spanning small-scale, global, and regional contexts. Some datasets available during Ocean Hackathon® are not typically accessible for free.

As part of Ocean Hackathon®, numerous data partners collaborate to furnish teams with data and tools necessary for their projects.

Support for participants in navigating and utilizing data during Ocean Hackathon® includes:

1. Ocean Hackathon® data catalogue: Participants can search for, visualize, and access data through this catalogue. Access to the Data Catalogue is available throughout the event.

2. Tutorials and resources: All data tutorials and resources are consolidated in a dedicated section on the Ocean Hackathon® website. Participants can access these resources during the event to enhance their understanding and use of the available data.

3. Data coaches: Experienced data coaches are available both on-site and remotely to provide assistance to teams. An online Data Coach Centre facilitates communication and support between coaches and participants, ensuring teams receive guidance in leveraging data effectively for their projects.

Cedre's activities span five main areas: response support, contingency planning, training, analysis and testing, and research. Additionally, Cedre is recognized as a valuable resource centre in its field.

Cerema

Cerema

Cerema is a prominent French public agency dedicated to developing and consolidating public expertise in urban planning, regional cohesion, ecological transition, and energy transition. Cerema also provides data related to maritime traffic.

Copernicus Marine Service

Copernicus Marine Service

The Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) is committed to ocean observation, monitoring, and forecasting. It offers free, open, regular, and systematic reference information on the physical, sea ice and biogeochemical states, variability, and dynamics of the global ocean and European regional seas.

EMBRC

The European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC) was established in 2013 to advance fundamental and applied marine biology and ecology research – while promoting the sustainable blue economy. This is achieved by enabling access to services, facilities, and technology platforms in more than 80 marine stations in 10 European countries in support of robust, cost-effective and efficient marine research. Launched in summer 2021, EMBRC’s new project, European Marine Omics Biodiversity Observation Network (EMO BON), aims to enhance the European contribution to global genomic observation efforts. As such, EMO BON will fill current gaps in biological observation, while offering insights into the genetic composition of marine biodiversity.

EMODnet

The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) is a consortium of organizations supported by the EU's integrated maritime policy. These organizations collaborate to observe the sea, process data in line with international standards, and provide this information freely as interoperable data layers and products.

EUMETSAT

EUMETSAT

The European organisation for the exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) operates weather, climate and environmental monitoring satellites on behalf of its member states, and the European Commission (EC). EUMETSAT provides data on sea ice, ocean winds, and sea surface temperature via its ocean and sea ice satellite application facility (OSI SAF) - a network of meteorological organisations from around Europe. In addition, EUMETSAT provides ocean colour, SST, and altimetry data, from the Copernicus Sentinel missions that it operates. Data are provided in near-real time, reprocessed time series and climate data records, enabling a wide variety of applications. EUMETSAT also provides a variety of data access and user support services.

French Biodiversity Agency

The French Biodiversity Agency (OFB) is a public institution tasked with the conservation and restoration of biodiversity across mainland France and its overseas territories. It operates under the supervision of the the ministries responsible for Ecology and Agriculture & Food.

A leader in ocean science, IFREMER conducts pioneering research rooted in sustainable development and open science principles. IFREMER's vision is to advance scientific knowledge, expertise, and innovation to protect and restore the ocean, promote the sustainable use of marine resources for societal benefit, and generate and disseminate ocean data, information, and knowledge.

Le Havre University

Le Havre University

The LITIS Computer Sciences Laboratory at the University of Le Havre Normandie conducts research focused on information processing, real-time data, Internet of Things (IoT), graphs, networks, and blockchains, with applications in logistics and maritime traffic domains. Through its partnership with AISHub, the University of Le Havre provides access to AIS (Automatic Identification System) vessel tracking data on a global scale. This collaboration enhances research capabilities in understanding and analyzing maritime traffic patterns and behaviors worldwide.

MERCATOR OCEAN INTERNATIONAL

MERCATOR OCEAN INTERNATIONAL

Mercator Ocean International is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing ocean science-based services aimed at conserving and sustainably utilizing oceans, seas, and marine resources. As part of its mission, Mercator Ocean implements the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service, which is a component of the European Earth Observation program Copernicus.

METEO-FRANCE

METEO-FRANCE

Météo-France serves as the national meteorological and climate service of France, with its central mission focused on ensuring the safety of individuals and property through accurate weather forecasting. This includes the preparation of weather vigilance maps that highlight hazardous weather phenomena, their impacts, and recommended precautions for public safety. In mainland France, the meteorological vigilance system is complemented by marine bulletins and avalanche risk assessment bulletins. Overseas, Météo-France operates a cyclone watch and warning system to protect populations from tropical cyclones and related hazards. This comprehensive approach helps mitigate risks and safeguard communities across both mainland France and its territories.

Ocean Data Sharing

Established in 2024, the Decade Coordination Office for Ocean Data Sharing liaises with Decade Actions to encourage making data associated with the UN Ocean Decade findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. DCO-ODS works alongside the Decade Actions and other IOC programmes to promote the Ocean Data Information System and to develop new patterns of interoperable data. DCO-ODS is also involved with other Decade Coordination bodies in promoting the use of ocean data in new areas. As such, we are excited to help connect OceanHackathon participants with ocean data.

ODATIS

The ODATIS Ocean Cluster (Ocean Data Information and Services) serves as the central hub for accessing all French ocean observation data. Its primary goal is to promote and facilitate the utilization of ocean observations collected through both in situ and remote sensing measurements. ODATIS plays a crucial role in describing, quantifying, and comprehending the entirety of the ocean environment, encompassing both offshore and coastal regions.

PatriNat - French Centre of expertise and data on nature

PatriNat - French Centre of expertise and data on nature

Since January 2017, the Joint Service Unit "Natural Heritage" has been undertaking expert and knowledge management missions on behalf of three overseeing bodies: the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (MNHN - French National Natural History Museum), the French Biodiversity Agency (OFB), and the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). Its primary objective is to provide expertise through the collection and analysis of biodiversity and geodiversity data across French territory, as well as through the advancement and application of new knowledge in ecology, evolutionary sciences, and anthropology. This scientific expertise aims to raise pertinent questions and propose solutions to enhance public policies concerning biodiversity, geodiversity, and their interactions with societies and human activities.

It serves as the primary public entity responsible for maritime and coastal geographic information.

WEkEO

WEkEO

WEkEO serves as the EU's reference service for Copernicus DIAS (Data and Information Access Service), offering access to environmental data, virtual environments for data processing, and expert user support. This DIAS service is implemented collaboratively by EUMETSAT, ECMWF, EEA, and MERCATOR OCEAN INTERNATIONAL.
