TLN05 - From Rescue to Screen: Mediterranean Sea Turtle Data for Kids

We want to turn real Mediterranean sea turtle rescue data into a playful “ocean twin” co‑created with kids. Together with sea turtle expert Sidonie Catteau and NGO Émergences (Antibes sea turtle clinic), we follow injured loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta), strandings, by‑catch with local fishers, boat strikes, plastic issues and rare nesting events on French beaches. These data already feed science and conservation… but they are almost invisible to citizens and children.  

Our challenge: build, in 48 hours, the first version of the **Lola Data Pipeline**:  

• ingest heterogeneous turtle data (rescue records, ObsTortueMed points, simple tracks, nesting / stranding events)  
• clean and structure them into a small, robust database for the Toulon–Nice–Antibes area  
• create a simple web dashboard to explore them (map, filters, “turtle cards”, basic stats)  
• and design a kid‑friendly JSON / API output that can plug directly into our existing *Carnet Magique* storytelling app used in schools.

This prototype will be the data backbone of a larger transmedia project: the docu‑series **“Sur la Route de Lola”** and the *Carnet Magique* app, which turn real rescue stories into animated adventures for children in classrooms, museums and (we hope) future TV programmes.  If you love marine data, maps, web tools and meaningful stories for young audiences, join us to make the invisible journeys of Mediterranean turtles visible, playable and shareable – starting here in Toulon.

– a small but well‑structured database (or set of CSV/GeoJSON files) describing real loggerhead turtle events in the French Mediterranean (rescues, strandings, nesting, basic fishery interactions, pollution cases),
– a simple web‑based interactive dashboard to explore these data (map, filters, “turtle cards”, basic statistics),
– and a kid‑friendly JSON/API output that can be directly consumed by our existing Carnet Magique storytelling app used in schools.

Concretely, this means working on data cleaning and integration, basic spatial analysis/visualisation, and a minimal front‑end + back‑end to browse the data and export them in a format ready for educational and transmedia uses.
