CHE07 - One Ocean-One Life (O3Life): Empowering Coastal Communities for a Sustainable Blue Future

O3L (One Ocean • One Life) is a community-driven marine conservation, awareness, and citizen science platform designed to connect coastal communities, fishermen, researchers, and ocean sustainability initiatives through participation, education, and digital innovation. India’s fishermen interact with the ocean every day, yet their valuable observations on marine life, fish resources, unusual ocean activity, and ecosystem changes rarely become part of conservation or scientific systems. O3L aims to bridge this gap by transforming coastal communities into active ocean guardians while supporting sustainable fisheries, marine conservation, and coastal resilience. The platform integrates marine sciences, fishing and aquaculture awareness, conservation initiatives, maritime education, circular economy concepts, and ecotourism opportunities into a single accessible ecosystem. It promotes sustainable coexistence between coastal livelihoods and marine biodiversity, including dolphins, whales, dugongs, sea turtles, and other ecologically important marine species.

Through a multilingual and mobile-friendly interface, users can:

• Report marine mammal sightings, strandings, and coastal observations,
• Access awareness guides on marine biodiversity, sustainable fishing, and protected species,
• Explore ocean sound, hydrophone, and marine science learning modules,
• Contribute community observations through citizen science,
• Visualize marine activity using interactive maps and digital data,
• Promote responsible coastal ecotourism and ocean stewardship,
• Encourage circular economy practices including waste reduction and sustainable coastal resource use.

O3L combines marine science, digital technology, storytelling, local knowledge, and community participation to create an inclusive and scalable conservation ecosystem for India’s coastal regions. O3L is not just an app — it is a movement to strengthen the relationship between people and the ocean, encouraging collaborative action for healthier seas, sustainable livelihoods, and a resilient marine future. “Healthy Oceans Begin with Connected Communities.”

During the 48-hour hackathon, the team has to develop a mobile-friendly digital platform and interactive citizen science tool called O3L (One Ocean • One Life).
The prototype will focus on marine conservation, sustainable coastal awareness, and community participation by connecting fishermen, researchers, and coastal communities through accessible digital technology.
The platform will include:
- A mobile-friendly awareness and reporting application,
- Marine mammal identification and conservation guides,
- Community-based reporting tools for marine mammal sightings and strandings,
- Interactive maps for visualizing marine observations and coastal activity,
- Ocean sound and hydrophone-based learning modules,
- Educational content on sustainable fishing, marine sciences, circular economy, and ecotourism,
- Citizen science features enabling coastal communities to contribute environmental observations and local knowledge.

The initial prototype will be developed in English during the hackathon. In future development stages, the team has to introduce multilingual support, particularly regional coastal languages, to improve accessibility and community engagement among local fishermen and coastal populations.

The challenge combines marine science, digital storytelling, mapping, awareness tools, and community engagement into an accessible prototype designed to support conservation, ocean literacy, and sustainable coastal futures.
