          • This part of Brittany is a centre of excellence for marine science and technology, also known for its culture of knowledge sharing and awareness raising. Brest is home to Océanopolis, France’s cultural centre for the public understanding of science devoted to the ocean. This establishment is unique in Europe, offering visitors a voyage of discovery – powered by science – through multiple marine ecosystems faithfully reproduced in immense aquariums. The centre aims to provide the public and especially school pupils with a better understanding of ocean biodiversity, which will encourage them to conserve it.

At the heart of the Ateliers de Capucins in Brest, the 70.8 gallery showcases Brittany’s maritime technology and innovation expertise. In both places, education teams work all year round, organising events, workshops and exhibitions to encourage encounters, knowledge sharing and career development.

Other local organisations help with their outreach work. These include the University of Brest, the Institute for Ocean Science (Ifremer) and Roscoff Marine Station. Further south in Brittany, Concarneau Marine Biology Station also contributes its top international expertise on seabirds, fish, seaweed and algae. Once again scientists, education teams and the network of associations that promote the natural world combine to share their research and knowledge as widely as possible, with a focus on exploring the marine environment and conserving biodiversity.
