      • Ocean Hackathon®: Submit your challenge!

      • South Africa, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Congo, Costa Rica, Croatia, Spain, France, Malaysia, Peru, Portugal, and Tunisia—one or more local editions of Ocean Hackathon® will be organized in these countries. The Campus mondial de la mer event is back in full force for its 9th edition, more international than ever. The 15 enthusiastic organizers are launching their call for challenges. Ready to embark on 48 hours of innovation at the crossroads of the marine and digital worlds?
      • Opening of the challenge call

        What is a challenge?
A challenge is a question or a concrete issue related to the marine and maritime world. It is an idea that the proposer wishes to explore and assess for feasibility using marine data. It can also be a technological component or an exploratory solution linked to a more advanced ongoing project.

        Who can propose a challenge?
Whether you are an individual (researcher, entrepreneur, engineer, student, or simply passionate about the ocean) or a legal entity (company, laboratory, association, local authority), you can be a challenge proposer!

What does Ocean Hackathon® offer to challenge proposers?

        • The dynamics of a team with complementary skills working on the challenge. The proposer will be fully integrated and will share their vision with the team throughout the 48 hours of the hackathon.
        • Privileged access to cataloged datasets, with the presence of data providers who will support the teams during the weekend.
        • Dedicated coaches to provide guidance and advice to move projects forward.
        • A guaranteed atmosphere of collaboration, creativity, and support!
        • The opportunity, perhaps, to pitch the project at the Grand International Final in Brest.

Where to find examples of challenges?
In the 2023 press kit, all projects from the 8th edition of Ocean Hackathon® are listed and described, with nearly 80 challenges!
Non-exhaustive list of themes: preservation of ecosystems, pollution control, ocean education and awareness, sustainable tourism, coastal erosion and shoreline issues, maritime transport, safety at sea, sustainable maritime economy, ocean understanding and observation, etc.

        How to apply?
A form must be completed before May 15, 2025.

        Information Webinar
For those still undecided about submitting a challenge, a webinar will be organized on April 23.

        The Ocean Hackathon® Community
The success of the event relies on the players of the Campus mondial de la mer: information dissemination worldwide, provision of data (Cedre, Cerema, Ifremer, Météo-France, Shom, etc.), coaching (Technopôle Brest-Iroise, Blue Valley-Pays de Morlaix, ENIB, IMT Atlantique, Clairmont Novus, Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique, etc.), support for the Grand Final as ambassadors (Ifremer, Océanopolis, Shom, etc.), etc.
The success also depends on national and international partners (EMBRC, EmodNet, Global Fishing Watch, Mercator Ocean International, Ocean Affairs Council of Taiwan, etc.), as well as alumni from previous editions.
The event is labeled "Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development" by the United Nations.

        The Ocean Hackathon® Concept

Ocean Hackathon® is a 48-hour non-stop event during which teams develop a prototype to tackle specific marine-related challenges. This prototype must be based on marine data provided by local, national, and international data providers.
Ocean Hackathon® is an initiative of the Campus mondial de la mer that encourages sharing, the use of new digital technologies, and entrepreneurial spirit.
The concept was born in Brest in 2016, tested and optimized there before being extended to other countries in 2019.
The event is organized with the support of Brest Metropole and the Brittany Region.
