      • The maritime economy is a major pillar of Finistère’s ecosystem, accounting for 42,064 jobs in 2024, or 11% of total employment, twice the regional average. Employment remained stable between 2019 and 2024, with a slight increase of 0.1%.

Four sectors account for the majority of activity: defence, shipbuilding and ship repair, seafood products, and research (6%).

230 innovative companies operate in the maritime sector. Since 2009, they have raised €180 million and filed 165 patents. Alongside a number of major employers, such as Thales, Naval Group and Brittany Ferries, the sector is largely made up of small and medium-sized businesses.

As for sectors with strong growth potential, maritime drones and marine renewable energy stand out in particular, offering promising prospects for employment, innovation and the ecological transition.
