At the heart of a catchment area with a population of 400,000, Brest Métropole is the hub of western Brittany. Created in 1974, the Brest Urban Community, which became a metropolis on 1 January 2015, comprises eight founding communes. Brittany's second largest metropolis is a driving force in the development and dynamics of western Brittany, and is the centre of gravity of a living and employment area organised within the Pôle métropolitain du pays de Brest.
