      • SPL06 - SCUBA Diving Clean-up Action App

          • Marine litter (ML) has become a major environmental problem worldwide. Large amounts of litter reach the ocean daily, and 70% of it ends up on the seabed at some point. Contrary to solving the litter problem at greater depths which is particularly challenging, ML accumulated in shallow waters up to 20 m depth can be easily removed by SCUBA diving clean-up actions. Such actions are usually carried out before and after the tourist season and are often organized by civil society (environmental associations, diving clubs).

ML collection can be expensive and time-consuming, and although commendable, clean-up actions are not intended to quantify and qualify the litter. In order to make the most of the information that can be obtained during the actions, the development of a specified mobile application would allow divers to enter data on the collected ML in a simplified way. This would serve as an excellent basis for scientific interpretations of the source and origin of litter, which is crucial for adopting the appropriate ML mitigation measures.

On the other hand, the application could serve divers to rank locations according to the potential amount of litter that could accumulate there, due to the winds, circulation, intensity of nautical tourism, and maritime traffic in general. The synergy between civil society and scientific institutions represents good practice in conducting citizen science and a significant step in raising public awareness of the harmfulness of ML.
