          • Problem:
            There are many different sources of plastic pollution to the environment : microfibers from textiles, tire wear particles, medical waste, fishing gear and a large proportion of it is found in the ocean. In the middle of the ocean, approximately 50% is abandoned fishing gear, including nets, buoys but also detergent bottles and plastic packaging from fishing boats. Plastic waste does not naturally decompose in the environment. It will fragment, and float on the ocean surface, or eventually sink and accumulate in marine sediment.

            Situation & Idea:
            To date, engineering solutions to address plastic pollution have been directed at cleanup for the pollution that is already in the environment, rather than reducing plastic emissions at the source. However, solutions are much more effective when they target plastic pollution in preventative measures rather than clean up.
             
          • What the challenge owner would like to develop over 48h
          • The challenge is to develop a methodology to identify patterns and the origin of abandoned fishing gears so that we traced it and prevent it’s loss.
