      • CDF03 - Submarine Cables - Deep in the Oceans - Which way will you go?

          • Subsea cables are vital to modern life in many ways – global communications, bringing power ashore from offshore renewables, and interconnectors allowing energy to be shared across the sea.

ESCA uses a fun exercise to give everyone a glimpse into designing a route for a subsea cable. This could be for the telecommunications, offshore renewables or power sector. The exercise is usually done in a group, and is run at training sessions, but the challenge is to turn it into an app or a game. It is quite a challenge as there are many different things to think about – and not all cables are the same!

The purpose of the exercise is to look at engineering a cable route based on likely constraints offshore – these could be marine protected areas, particular seabed features, strong currents, other infrastructure on the seabed, wind farms – the list is quite extensive, and each constraint brings its own challenges. Some are insurmountable and can’t be crossed, others may need some thinking about, and some features or activities can co-exist with cables.
