      • BRE11 - An escape game for marine pollution management training

          • Over the past 30 years maritime transport of goods – including chemical shipping traffic – has been constantly increasing. For instance, more than 200MT of Hazard Noxious Substances (HNS) are transported by sea each year.

This increase of maritime traffic implies a greater risk of accidents that can lead to marine pollutions, whether by oil or HNS. In addition, accidental HNS spills are more difficult to handle: some highly volatile HNS slicks can form potentially toxic gas clouds, barely distinguishable to the naked eye and therefore dangerous for pollution control authorities and coastal populations in the event of drift.

This project aims to develop an escape game for a fun and innovative training of local authorities and first responders (firemen, etc.) in crisis management in the event of accidental pollution at sea. The player shall accomplish the following mission: protecting the coastal population from a gas cloud formed following an accidental spill at sea. To achieve this, the player shall solve a series of enigmas that will ultimately teach him/her about the course of pollution response operations, the potential consequences of a marine pollution, and the actions to protect first responders. The player will be able to make decisions to manage at best the crisis and hence save the inhabitants of the nearest town.

An escape game in augmented reality with scenarios of toxic clouds from different products on different sites (ports, open sea, etc.) can be envisaged.

          • What the challenge owner would like to develop over 48h
          • An escape game for stakeholders involved in marine pollution response activities (light version, in 2D, online or augmented reality).
The game could also be accessible to the general public with the aim of showing to the player how pollution response operations are carried out, the potential effects of marine pollution, the protection methods of the responders, etc.
