ALLOHa

ALLOHa is the Advanced Living Lab for Ocean Hacks: a centre for collaboration and innovation, bringing together both the marine science and data science communities and innovative companies operating in these sectors.

It aims to create a space which will foster collaboration and generate innovative solutions for sustainable oceans.

ALLOHa is hosted on the Datarmor marine computing and data processing infrastructure. It is a sandbox comprising data, calculation methods, analysis tools and expertise and providing a secure testing environment in which to develop proofs of concept and build collaborative projects.

ALLOHa is :

  • A community,
  • An activity programme,
  • A service provider and
  • A third place for collaborative innovation which encourages the formation of groups working on proofs of concept.

Activity programme

ALLOHa - Atelier Machine Learning

The Machine Learning Workshop involves a speaker:

  • Who addresses one practical and applied machine learning issue,
  • Who uses one machine learning method,
  • And applies it to one benchmark dataset.

The workshop focuses on:

  • An intuitive and graphical understanding of the theory and associated equations,
  • Neural network family methods,
  • Data and code sharing,
  • Sharing best practice in data science, for example using Python and the Jupyter Notebook, benchmarking and the centralised Datarmor platform (Ifremer) for code and data.

ALLOHa - Domino's Lecture

A relaxed session of reading and critiquing scientific articles about the work underpinning artificial intelligence. Pizza is served on the side to make the science more digestible!

Each session will be run by a different volunteer ‘guru’.

The guru’s role is to:

  • Circulate reading material to everyone on the list at least a week in advance,
  • Hand out a summary (maximum one page) on the morning of the Domino’s Lecture group meeting,
  • Print out a copy of the summary for each member of the group.

Content of the summary distributed by the guru:

  • Context, aims, any original contributions, model considered, positives and negatives (between one and three sentences for each point),
  • Maximum one page.

Domino’s Lecture participants must

  • Each have read the paper before the meeting,
  • Each draw up and email one or more questions to the guru.

If they don’t, they won’t get pizza!

ALLOHa - Pool Data Scientists & ALLOHa Lunch Box

Our pool of data scientists is available every Tuesday at the Pôle Numérique Brest Iroise (PNBI) to answer questions, offer advice and take part in discussions and networking. Please contact us, and we will put you in touch with the relevant expert.

Besides these regular events, we also organise partnering days on specific topics.

The days include ‘flash’ or ‘elevator pitch’ presentations, working groups, collating and sharing information and discussion, a social lunch and optional coworking in the afternoon.
